Many myths and legends swirl around the origins of Belly Dance. Its precursors are probably ancient, but the performance versions we see today – the sexy woman in a sparkling two-piece costume, trailing a chiffon veil - trace back only to about the 1920s, when people in the colonised countries of Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey began to experiment with adding a more cosmopolitan flavour to their native dances. Traditionally it’s a solo, improvised dance that allows you to really feel and express the music, using juicy circles and undulations, crisp locks and bubbly shimmies. And it’s not just for the stage! The very same movements are used by young and old, fat and thin, male and female when a favourite song comes on and the mood is right. Belly Dance is a dance, not a workout system. But practiced regularly and with correct alignment, bellydance will tone and strengthen all of your core muscles, and you may notice some more definition. You will come to feel a strength and firmness that was not there before.
